Since the debut of the Nissan Altima in 2012, the Japanese manufacturer has left no stone unturned to maintain the market hold it’s had since. The universal appeal of the Altima has driven Nissan to release a refreshed 2016 version.
Insiders hint at the new design having retained the Murano’s plastic exterior trim. While the exterior fails to impress the interiors are comfortable and more insulated. Noticeably, the engine drone is further reduced thanks to the noise reducing exterior glass.
On the performance front, the engine rev is guided by CVT borrowed from Maxima and Murano. The 2.5 L Quadra cylinder engine has few improvements but none of stark significance. Improvement is also noticeable in the compression ratio with unchanged torque and horsepower (180lb-ft and 180, respectively).
The SR trim of the Altima has stiffer springs in the rear, antiroll bars and exclusive calibration of the damper to minimize roll over (by 21 percent). Road grip is also improved owing to the revision of the torque-vectoring system which is brake dependent. Another area of improvement is in the steering department which has been re-programed to exude a heavier feel and feedback. The 18 inch wheel system with shift paddles that are column mounted increase road handling.
The 2016 Nissan Altima may not be the in the race for the top two slots of sport sedans. The car will however leave the consumer with no complaints in the handling and performance department.
