If you ask Carlos Ghosn, CEO of The Renault Nissan Alliance, bringing electric cars to the masses is their focus. You won’t see Nissan “going niche” to compete with Tesla in the luxury electric vehicle segment. That said, any specialization with electric cars will be in the crossover category, according to Ghosn. CUVs are currently experiencing a boom in the U.S., Europe and China. More immediate focus is on rolling out the next-generation LEAF, expected in 2017 or 2018. Nissan’s only electric car in the U.S., the LEAF is reported to receive a significant battery upgrade, as well as body redesign, in the coming model years. With MSRP starting under $30k, the Nissan LEAF is certainly more attainable for the masses than some of its luxury competitors.
