Monterey’s Moon Tree:
There are plenty of gorgeous trees around Monterey, from the California sycamore to the quaking aspen. But none of those varieties are quite like the Moon Tree, which was grown from seeds that were exposed to cosmic radiation. Back in 1971, the astronauts on the Apollo 14 mission brought some seeds up with them to see if space rays had any effect on tree growth. Monterey is home to one of the few trees that were born from these seeds, and today they act as a memorial to the brave astronauts from the Apollo mission that have since passed away.
The Old Whaling Station:
Many years ago, before whaling was outlawed, fishermen made a living hunting whales for their valuable blubber and other parts. The commercial whaling industry was a big part of California’s economy until the end of the 20th century. Because of the rich history and integral part that whaling played, the Old Whaling Station is now a registered historic landmark and it was restored in 1980. It’s located by the coast off in Heritage Harbor, and offers a unique view of a different time and economic setting. Nowadays, you can take a tour through the facilities and its even a popular wedding location.
