The Signal Shield is an experimental new approach at preventing distracted driving by temporarily preventing the phone from connecting to the outside world. This small box clips onto the driver’s armrest and blocks the phone inside from getting or sending any WiFi, Bluetooth or phone signals. Nissan is hoping this will remove the urge to constantly be glancing down looking for new notifications or text messages. Drivers will still be able to use the media functions though, thanks to a small hole which provides just enough room for an auxiliary cable.

A Signal Shield box is essentially a miniature Faraday cage, which blocks whatever is inside from receiving any outside #signals. Many states already discourage distracted driving by making cell phone usage illegal while driving, and Nissan is hoping this device can help avoid any other unnecessary cases of distracted driving. When describing the development of the Signal Shield, a Nissan spokesman stated that, “Nissan is always looking at new ways of improving the safety and well-being of our customers.”
