At the Nissan Technical Centre Europe, Nissan is working on a new direct to grid integration system for its electric cars. This small project consists of eight company vehicles that are always charging. When an employee needs to travel for whatever reason, they are able to use these electric cars to get to their destination and back. The range on the cars is ideal for short trips into town or to meetings that employees are headed to, and being electric cars they produce no harmful emissions. Additionally, this system ensures the cars are always charged and ready to use, unlike a gas powered car which will need to be refueled after a couple of trips.

The most critical part of this system is its direct grid integration. Because of this, they can both receive electricity as well as give it back in times of greater stress. These cars essentially act as extra electrical storage for the entire grid, while still operating like a normal car whenever necessary. Vice President for Vehicle Design and Development David Moss added, “it gives us the opportunity to showcase to the world how the energy management systems Nissan is developing can work in a real-life business situation.”

Nissan Partners With Tech Companies To Design Self-Driving Cars

When it comes to creating technologically advanced features, car manufacturers can only get so far on their own. Most companies are made up of automotive engineers who simply don’t have enough expertise to make new systems such as a self-driving car, at least on their own. That’s why partnerships with other corporations are so important for producing growth within the industry, as they allow for more complex ideas to be added. Nissan recently partnered with several companies to create autonomous vehicles by 2020.

Beginning with a Microsoft partnership in late September, Nissan has continued to push the upper boundaries of car design with their own 300-person tech startup, named Alliance Connected Vehicle and Mobility Services. This group will be conducting research in three major areas: software development, cloud engineering and data analytics. These three have been targeted as the biggest areas that need to be expanded in order to produce self-driving cars, which Nissan plans to launch 12 of by 2020.

Software development is understandably the most important area, as a car’s onboard computer needs to be able to properly use all its features.

Additionally, software is the “driver” of a self-driving car, scanning the road and constantly making adjustments. Cloud engineering and data analytics go hand in hand, as terabytes of data collected from different systems must be processed and examined in order for autonomous cars to “learn” how to drive.  To accelerate both of these, Nissan will be working with the firm Sylpheo as well as the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

He added that the duo would be hard at work to better integrate vehicle software and compatibility across all models. While automakers do not necessarily have experts in vehicle software, Microsoft engineers can help to improve the user interface and make driving simpler and seamless. The second major talking point was the production of self-driving cars, which Nissan has already had success with in Japan through their ProPilot. Though this vehicle is only partially autonomous, Ghoson mentioned that Nissan plans to release at least 10 different partially self-driving cars by 2020, even if they do require minimal driver input. He expects a fully driverless car will be on the market by 2025. He also argued that the car will still remain a personalized space for every owner, even with this automated implementation.
