Cannery Row

John Steinbeck is one of America’s best known authors, and has received critical acclaim for his fictional stories of life in the West. He was born about 30 miles from #CanneryRow, and spent most of his life in Pacific Grove. Here he gathered writing material for his novels by observing the fish packing plant and the surrounding bordellos and flophouses, and immortalized this street in his fittingly named book, Cannery Row. He also made friends with Ed Ricketts, a marine biologist at the Biological Laboratory and primary inspiration for the character “Doc.” Cannery Row largely consists of museums today, and you can learn more about the historical plant and its operations on a guided tour.

Stevenson House

The Stevenson House was named for legendary author Robert Louis Stevenson, who stayed in this shelter in 1878. This two-story home acted as a refuge for families, artists and workers back in the Mexican era, and it was here that Stevenson met his future wife. During his stay, he also penned one of his early works, Old Pacific Capital, and nowadays the Robert Louis Stevenson Club of Monterey keeps this old home open for tours.
